Water on the floor right now? Call first

Step by step

Do these in order.

  1. Stop the water. Shut the main water valve, usually where the water line enters the house, often in the basement or near the water heater. For a toilet or sink, use the valve under it.
  2. Make it safe. If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, don't walk in it. Turn off power to the wet area at the breaker only if you can reach the panel while standing somewhere dry.
  3. Photograph everything before you move it. Wide shots of each room, close-ups of the damage, the source (the burst pipe, the failed hose) and anything damaged. Short videos help too.
  4. Call a restoration company. Drying equipment should start as soon as possible. Wet drywall, floors and insulation begin to grow mold within a day or two.
  5. Call your insurance company to open a claim, and write down the claim number and the adjuster's name. Your policy expects you to act quickly to prevent more damage, which is what drying does.
  6. Move what you can to a dry room: electronics, papers, rugs, furniture legs off wet carpet. Keep damaged items; the adjuster may want to see them.
  7. Keep every receipt for anything you buy or pay for because of the damage, including a hotel if you can't stay home.

Straight answers

First-day questions.

Do I have to wait for the adjuster before starting cleanup?

No. Your policy expects you to prevent further damage, and drying is how you do that. Document everything first, then start. We document everything your adjuster needs and bill your insurance company directly.

Can I choose my own restoration company?

Yes. In New York you can choose your own contractor; you don't have to use your insurance company's preferred vendor.

How long does drying take?

Most rooms take three to five days of drying equipment, checked daily with moisture readings. It depends on how much water and what it soaked into.

Will my insurance cover it?

It depends on your policy and the cause. Read our guide Does my insurance cover water damage?, and ask your adjuster about your specific policy.

Every policy differs. This page is general guidance, not a coverage decision; your policy and adjuster decide coverage.
