  2. 2Photograph from the doorway. Rooms, contents, and the exterior. Wide shots first, then details. Don't disturb anything yet.
  3. 3Start a loss list. Names, model numbers, approximate purchase dates of damaged items — while memory is fresh.

  1. ✗Don't wipe soot. Smoke residue is acidic. Wiping grinds it into finishes and can turn cleanable surfaces into replacements.
  2. ✗Don't run the HVAC. One cycle spreads soot through every duct and every room in the house.
  3. ✗Don't wash smoky clothes at home. Regular detergents can set smoke odor permanently. Textiles need specialized processing.

The fire was small — do I really need professional restoration?

Even a small kitchen fire pushes acidic soot through the whole house via air currents. Within days it permanently etches metals, glass, and finishes. A fast professional cleaning usually costs your insurer far less than the replacements caused by waiting.

Can smoke smell be completely removed?

Yes — but only by removing the source. We clean or seal every affected surface and treat air and ducts with hydroxyl/ozone. Sprays and 'odor bombs' mask it for a week; proper deodorization ends it.

What is emergency board-up and why does my policy require it?

Your policy obligates you to protect the property from further damage after a loss. Open windows, doors, or roof let in weather and intruders — and give the carrier grounds to deny that secondary damage. We secure everything the same night and bill it to the claim.

Do you clean and store our belongings too?

Yes. Our contents team inventories and photographs every item, packs out what's salvageable, cleans and deodorizes it, and stores it in our climate-controlled facility until your home is ready.

Who deals with the insurance company?

We do, alongside you. We photograph everything, write the Xactimate estimate in the format adjusters require, and walk the loss with your adjuster line by line. You approve decisions — we handle the paperwork fight.
